P4/5 make a pond (with the help of Carly Dunne!)
The enthusiasm and excitement was clear to see when P4/5 were asked to help make a pond around the back of our school. We learnt lots about what we would need to make a successful pond - stones, rocks, water and water plants. Everyone had a job to do and we saw lots of insects that would live around our pond. We will watch the pond carefully and see if we can see any pond life appearing. Thank you to Carly for helping us with this project!
Summer Learning
As part of our seaside topic we incorporate investigating capacity.
P4/5 enjoyed learning about capacity outside today!! We estimated and measured different amounts of liquid. We focused on litres, half litres and quarter litres. We had lots of fun and learnt a lot about capacity (all while enjoying the sunshine!!)
In class we made healthy pizza using wholemeal pitta bread, low fat cheddar, sweetcorn and ham. We sorted the ingredients into food groups and discussed the nutritional value of our ingredients. We will be completing some procedural writing about this tsk later in the week.
The Mystery at the Perfect Pancake Competition
On Pancake Tuesday the class were told a story about a crime that had taken place during a pancake baking competition. The class split into teams to solve some numeracy problems that would lead them to the criminal. The culprit was eventually found by piecing together the clues and eliminating anyone who was not involved. We really enjoyed being detectives for the day!!
Stone Age Cookery
Our topic is Early Man and 4/5 cooked up a stone age feast! We ground our own flour using flat stones and oats. (We didn't use this flour due to hygiene reasons but had fun grinding it!)
We made nettle soup (improvising by using cabbage instead of nettles), stewed berries and honey, scrambled eggs, fish, beef pieces, seeds, dried fruits and flat bread with honey.
The experience was really enjoyable and most children tried all of the food! We realised how hard it would have been for the hunter-gathers to collect and cook their food. We really missed herbs and spices and sugar to flavour our food.
STEM
Designing and building 3D models using gum drops and cocktail sticks
Incredible Me
As part of our new topic we are finding out all about ourselves. We are using measuring equipment to measure parts of our bodies and learn about metres and centimetres.
Spanish Day
We held a Spanish Day in P4/5. We dressed up in a Spanish theme, we made Spanish instruments, ate Spanish food, acted out a bull fight and learnt Spanish songs.
Practical Money Maths
A fun mental math session was held in P4/5 this week. We moved to different stations set up in our room and completed different money related activities. Some groups identified and counted coins, others calculated change and some played money games.
Investigating Shadows
As part of our topic Spain we have been learning about the sun. During the super weather we investigated shadows. We drew around our shadows and predicted if our shadows would move throughout the day. Very few children knew what would happen!
An impromptu debate then occurred about which moved the earth or the sun!!!
When we returned later to check our shadows we realised they had moved and further investigated why. I know the children looked a lot more closely at shdows they found over the next few weeks.
Ulster Museum
P4/5 enjoyed a great trip to see Takabuti a mummy dating back to the 7th century. We took part in an Egyptian workshop and got to see real artefacts that were over 3,000 years old. After lunch we had some free time to splice the museum before travelling home.

Literacy Week 2017
21 Elephants tells the story of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. When it was complete many people were afraid of it's sheer size and refused to step foot on it. People's faith in the bridge grew when 21 circus elephants crossed the bridge.
P4/5 were given the challenge to build a bridge for 21 elephants using only paper cups, lollipop sticks and elastic bands. They had to work in teams to complete this challenge. Some groups were more successful than others.
If a group was successful they were given a second challenge to build a double decker bridge still holding 21 elephants.
Extreme Earth
Our new topic is Extreme Earth! We are looking at extreme weather and natural disasters. Below are some photos of what we have been doing during this topic!
The Perfect Hamburger
To conclude our food topic we made our very own perfect hamburgers! As we have been reading "The Perfect Hamburger" as our class novel we followed in Joe's footsteps and set out to create a hamburger that would rival any bought in a restaurant!! Some children were very adventurous adding a variety of herbs and spices whilst others preferred to keep theirs plain and simple. However everyone agreed that all the hamburgers were delicious!!
Wednesday 23rd February 2016
Today we made healthy pizzas!! It was good fun and we learnt where each ingredient fitted in to our Eatwell Plate and the changes that happened to the different foods during the heating process. Ask your child how they made them!
We have been conducting a scientific experiment involving Haribo Gummy Bears. P4/5 have been investigating what happens to these sweets when they are soaked in various liquids. We learnt a lot and have had loads of fun investigating this.
Our latest experiment involves boiled eggs and a variety of drinks!! The shell of a boiled egg is very similar to the substance that makes up our teeth. We have placed an egg in cola, energy drink, water, milk, diluting juice and flavoured water. We will examine the results in a weeks time ....
During book week P4/5 were set the challenge to discover which shaped column, circular, square or triangular, would hold the most books.
The first and possibly the most difficult challenge was actually constructing the 3 different column shapes, a demonstration of good paper folding was needed and the kids soon had the hang of it and were on their way.
It was discovered that the circular column held the most and it was rightly suggested by many that this happened because there was no fold in the paper and the weight if the books was evenly distributed throughout the circular column.
What a clever bunch we have in P4/5.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
